Style is often the key priority and not the level of protection a pair of sunglasses is able to provide.<\/p>\n<p>Even for those who do spend a considerable amount of time in the sun, such as golfers, runners, cyclists and those who drive, sunglasses are viewed as an accessory to complete their looks or merely as a collectible to diversify their wardrobe<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-wrapper\">\n<section class=\"block block- block--view-mode-default clearfix\">\n<figure class=\"figure block block- block--view-mode-default clearfix\" data-img-id=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/onecms-res.cloudinary.com\/image\/upload\/s--izGCoZn1--\/c_crop,h_1414,w_1885,x_236,y_0\/c_fill,g_auto,h_523,w_693\/f_auto,q_auto\/v1\/mediacorp\/cna\/image\/2022\/11\/02\/istock-174902534.jpg?itok=VxbkJZwI\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption class=\"figure__caption\">People use sunglasses to look good rather than protect their eyes from UV exposure.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"text\">\n<div class=\"text-long\">\n<p>Malaysians just aren\u2019t wearing sunglasses often enough. Maybe it\u2019s because we spend a lot more time indoors gives us the impression that we don\u2019t need to (protect our eyes).<\/p>\n<p>Being myopic is another stumbling block. With the high incidence of\u00a0spectacle wearing locally, it is\u00a0inconvenient to change to\u00a0sunglasses, unless they are purpose-built with the refractive error. Clip-on sunglasses are available but they look less cool, so they are far less popular.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"text\">\n<div class=\"text-long\">\n<p>Given our equatorial location, where we\u2019re surrounded by intense UV rays all year round, it seems counterintuitive that not many of us step out of the building with sunglasses on. Instead, we\u2019d rather squint, shield our eyes with our hands or open up an umbrella (UV rays can still be reflected off the pavement and into your eyes)\u00a0while waiting to cross the road under the hot sun.<\/p>\n<p>We are damaging our eyes slowly when we chose not to wear sunglasses. But when we do put on sunglasses, chances are, we are protecting our eyes.<\/p>\n<p>You probably don\u2019t realise it now as the effects of UV exposure \u2013 such as pterygiums and cataracts \u2013 take decades to manifest.
